Spanish adverbs

Adverbs are words that inform us when, how, why or where the action happens.

Adverbs modify a verb, a noun, an adjective, another adverb or a entire sentence.

Usually they are invariable. In some cases the can have sufixes: cerquita, prontito ...

There are several different classes of adverb: quantity, time, frequency, manner, place, probability, duration, negation, afirmation...

1. Adverbs modifying a verb: Andrea habla bien español.

2. Adverbs modifying an adjective: Esta paella está muy buena.

3. Adverbs modifying another adverb: Vive muy lejos.

4. Adverbs modifying a noun: Corrió escaleras arriba.

Adverbs of degree, quantity

Adverbs of quantity serve as intensifiers and modifiers. Adverbs of degree increase or decrease the effect of the verb. They come before the words they modify.

- muy: Me voy a casa, ya es muy tarde (It is very late)
- demasiado: No comas demasiado.
- bastante: Este ejercicio es bastante difícil. (fairly difficult). In other cases, bastante means enough, fairly, quite, rather-pretty, very, sufficient,…
- poco: Pedro es poco trabajador.
- más: No gracias, no quiero más.
- casi: Casi no tengo tiempo libre. (almost)
- tan (so)

Adverbs of time

Adverbs of time show when an action is done, or the duration or frequency.

- ahora: Ahora voy a salir de casa.
- nunca: Nunca juego a las cartas.
- luego: Luego te llamo.
- después: Primero voy a visitar el Museo y después la catedral.
- antes: Antes me gustaba ir al monte.
- tarde: Llámame más tarde.
- pronto: Juan suele levantarse pronto.
- temprano: ¿Puedes venir mañana más temprano?
- aún: Aún no he terminado los ejercicios.
- todavía: Todavía no he enviado el e-mail.
- ya: Ya ha llegado Pedro.
- anteayer: Anteayer fui a San Sebastián.
- ayer: Ayer me quedé en casa todo el día.
- hoy: Hoy voy a ir al cine.
- mañana: Mañana tengo fiesta.
- pasado mañana: Pasado mañana vendrá Ana.

Adverbs of frequency

- siempre: Siempre me llama por la noche.
- a menudo: Voy a la playa a menudo
- nunca: No he estado nunca en Málaga.
- jamás: Jamás he buceado.

Adverbs of manner

Adverbs of manner modify a verb to describe the way the action is done.

- así: ¿Está bien escrito así?
- bien: Sí, está bien.
- mal: Hoy me encuentro mal.
- rápidamente: Voy rápidamente a casa.
- lentamente: Siempre hace todo lentamente.
- despacio: ¿Puede hablar más despacio, por favor?
- normalmente: Normalmente voy devaciones en septiembre.
- generalmente: Generalmente tomo un café con leche para desayunar.
- especialmente: He hecho este postre especialmente para ti.

Adverbs of place

Adverbs of place show where the action is done.

- aquí: ¿Está Luis aquí?
- ahí: El libro que estás buscando está ahí.
- allí: Aquel edificio de allí es el museo de arte contemporáneo.
- cerca: ¿Hay algún banco cerca?
- lejos: Mi casa está bastante lejos.
- arriba: Voy un momento arriba.
- abajo: El sótano está abajo.
- adelante: Pase, adelante, por favor.
- atrás: Dé un poco más marcha atrás.
- dentro: No entres ahí dentro.

Adverbs of probability

Adverbs of negation

- no: No voy a salir.
- tampoco: Yo tampoco voy a salir hoy.
- ni: No me gusta ni la carne de pollo ni la de pavo.

Adverbs of afirmation

- sí: ¿Quieres tomar algo? Sí, una caña.
- también: Yo también quiero una caña.
- claro: ¿Vas a venir? Claro.
